The Hawkesbury River is one of the great East Coast rivers. Within the Hawkesbury are some of the oldest settlements in Australia. The four remaining 'Macquarie' towns, established by Governor Macquarie in 1810 remain are beautiful historic treasures: Windsor, Richmond, Wilberforce and Pitt Town. The Hawkesbury river travels through some exceptionally wonderful country, much of which is still inaccessible. It opens into a magnificent estuary at Brooklyn before entering the ocean at Pittwater.
